Flowers, chocolate covered strawberries, kisses, and cards.  Ahhh the joys of February 14th.

What does Valentine’s Day mean to you?  Gifts from your loved one?  Quality time with your spouse or home cooked dinners in place of a fancy restaurant to display your love?

I get it, we want to feel important, heard, seen and validated, especially on a day full of love reminders and heart-filled momentoes to make us feel special.

But, what I told you there was so much more to Valentine’s Day than just the traditional candy and flowers we might be gifted?

What if I told you Valentine’s Day is about something deeper, something other than the B.S. external stuff?

Go with me here…..

I want you to do something for me.

I want you to grab a sheet of paper and write down 3 things.

  1.  What’s a specific moment you can remember when you felt the happiest?  Write it down.  Maybe it’s your wedding day or when your baby was born or maybe it was last week when you decided to play in the dirt for the first time.  Whatever it is, it’s not silly, write it down.
  2. Write down the best gift you ever received.  Maybe it was a new designer purse or maybe it was a handwritten card from someone.  Think about it for a minute and jot that down.
  3. Write down what LOVE looks like to you.  It can be anything!  Love can be the giggle your baby makes or love can be the warm hug you receive from your partner or love can be sitting on your couch enjoying a warm cup of tea.  I want you to write down whatever comes to your mind, don’t be shy, no one will see this but you!

Take a look at your answers, what’s the common theme or thread throughout them?  Do you notice that maybe it wasn’t the large gifts that meant the most to you, but rather the gifts that were heartfelt and less than a few dollars?  Were you surprised at what LOVE looks like to you?  What were some of your descriptor words that really stuck out to you?

Finally, if you want to take this a step further, I encourage you to write a letter to yourself in the future tense and date it today but one year ahead. (February 14th, 2019) What have you accomplished?  What are you proud of?  What did you endure?  Write it all out and envision it!!  Really put your heart into it and let the words flow. What comes to mind for you?  Once you’re done, tuck it away in a safe place and open it this time next year!  <3 You’ll be amazed what comes to reality for you when you truly envision what you want your life to look like.  We can do anything we put our minds too.

The most important takeaway is this:

People will love you to the best of their ability.

Things will come and go.

But self-love is ever evolving.  Don’t forget how worthy you are of experiencing the best there is in life, even with yourself!  Treat yourself to a Valentine’s Day surprise like a massage, nail treatment or a warm bath!  <3

Sending warm hugs on this day!

xo,

Kim
